This is me, with some of my dogs, in my happy place at the farm listening to a podcast
In March 2020 I signed up for a coaching program called Creators for Good. The program specialises in social impact and ethical businesses, looking at transforming both strategy and mindset.
At that time, Stuff Talks didn’t exist. But my other business, ECRUU, was going through its fourth year and doing well on all accounts. However, I was feeling a little lost about how to take things forward and how to grow it in a way that was aligned with my beliefs and what I hoped to achieve.
I was feeling a little lost about how to take things forward and how to grow it in a way that was aligned with my beliefs and what I hoped to achieve.
I will tell you more about my other business ECRUU another time. All you need to know here is that it is a “traditional” business in the sense that it was not set up to “make a difference” or to “contribute” etc. But these are values that are very important both to myself and to my business partner in the venture.
The 6-months coaching program cost USD 3,000. This seemed like a lot of money, it was almost the same price as one full year at University. But in hindsight, I can tell you it was worth every penny.
In hindsight, I can tell you it was worth every penny.
I want to share with you the 3 most important things I have learned during that period, and the impact these have had on my life today.
#1 Others have been there before you
ECRUU was doing well but I also had all these other aspirations I wanted to do in life and I wasn’t sure how to integrate them into one whole. I did a lot of research, read books but I couldn’t find other examples that fit exactly what I was going through. To add to the confusion, I wasn’t sure what I was looking for, besides feeling good (and earning enough) doing something that I thought was meaningful.
When I had my first session with my coach, I discovered that her company specialises in helping people who are exactly where I was. She was able to identify a lot of the issues I was struggling with and helped me see that, in fact, it was quite normal for me to be where I was. I felt tremendous relief realising that.
#2 There is method to madness
I’m not someone who easily gets stuck, and I’m definitely a doer. But sometimes, just doing for the sake of doing isn’t helpful. Once I had realised that there was nothing unique about my situation (a mixture of relief and sadness at the same time, it’s tragic not to be unique!), I could put together a proper strategy and methods to work my way forward.
I had always associated business and strategy with things that are very money minded and yucky, but I learned that there are ways to apply very good knowledge - knowledge that has been tried and tested - to my life and my business. I admit that strategy was never my forte, and I always prided myself on being the spontaneous kind who doesn’t plan anything. But once I discovered how I could apply strategy in a way that made sense for me and that was aligned with my beliefs, it changed everything. I also understood that even things that seem very “airy” can make do with effective methodology.
#3 Professional help makes a hell of a difference
I’ve got a good history of teaching myself stuff, and I can be wary of signing up for courses unless I’m convinced that it’s not something I can figure out for myself. While this is fine in many situations, in some bigger, more complex and more important cases, getting professional help makes a huge difference. Mindset wise, the coaching helped me stay on track. It gave me access to a professional I could talk to about my doubts and struggles. With years of experience in her field and dealing with clients like me (it is really sad that I’m not unique) she had encountered pretty much every challenge (both internal, self-created as well as external) that I was struggling with. I love my friends and family, but they simply would not have been able to help me in that way.
On the one hand, I feel a little sad that I didn’t know all the stuff I know now YEARS ago, as it would have saved me a lot of time, energy and money. But I am also grateful that I did go through the process and I feel much more in control today, because I have proper tools and a real strategy to work with.
Have you, too, been thinking about ways to move your life forward?
If so, I really encourage you to go out there and find someone, a professional, who can help you take your life to the next level. Someone, or an organisation that can help you deal with whatever you’d like to work on, whether it be your emotions, your mindset, your health, anything.
On January 1, 2021, I will be increasing the prices of all my programs.
You can still sign up until the end of the month of December at the old prices. Feel free to schedule a free discovery session if you’d like to see whether my programs make sense for you.
